Knight’s castle or shrivelled Ötzi?
Fabulous family excursions in South Tyrol.
Storm the castles and ruins of the area as courageous knights and noble damsels. Pay a visit to wizened old Ötzi in Bolzano’s Museum of Archaeology, explore the depths of the universe at the observatory… South Tyrol has a host of things on offer to explore and discover. Whatever the weather, there’s always a rich variety of fun things to do on a holiday for the whole family here. The most popular destinations for family outings are under an hour away from the Alpenhof by car. As for the flying time for superheroes, however, we’re still not sure about that.
aThe earth pyramids of Terento
You really won’t believe your eyes! The earth pyramids of Terento and Platten are examples of an extraordinary natural phenomenon. It’s definitely worth a visit with the family, even if not all of the hiking trail is really doable with a buggy. The walk begins at the main car park in Terento and from there the path to the earth pyramids is well signposted. We suggest you factor in about 40 minutes for the journey there. The altitude difference, which shouldn’t be too much of a problem, is about 230 metres.

Back in the Middle Ages the Mühlbach hermitage served as a river dam, a stronghold and a customs station for entering the Puster Valley. Today this site, so steeped in history, is open for guided tours and plays host to numerous events, such as open-air theatre performances.

Visit one of the largest fortresses in the country! High above the Rienza Ravine, on the opposite side of the valley to Maranza, the mighty Rodeneck Castle looms. It’s not just its lofty location which makes it so impressive – the interior of the old castle walls is just spectacular. Guided tours are available from June through to November. A particular highlight is the children’s tour for little knights and damsels. Every Monday at 3pm for children aged 5 and over.

From the sheep to a thick woolly coat. But how does it work? The Loden Museum in Vintl is definitely worth a visit, even with the little ones! The cuddly animals in the open-air enclosure will definitely be pleased to see you! In the museum itself, the process of loden production - from the shearing of the sheep to tumbling, combing and spinning the wool – is explained step by step in a way which is accessible for children. Guided tours are also available.

Hustle and bustle in the towns
… IN BRIXEN
The old cathedral town of Brixen is definitely worth a visit – whether you’re young or old! Younger visitors can enjoy the numerous play areas, the woodland adventure parks and the climbing walls in the city. Throughout the whole summer there are numerous events for children here. A particular highlight is the special family tour – an entertaining journey of discovery through the historic city centre of Brixen. Learning is fun this way!
… in Bruneck
They say that the picturesque little town of Bruneck is the heart and soul of the Puster Valley. The medieval alleyways, the venerable old castle on the Schlossberg hill, the mysterious woods which surround it. In summer there’s a rich array of open-air events such as the weekly children’s flea market.
… in Sterzing
This little town of the upper Eisack valley has a particular magic all of its own. The historic city centre is replete with medieval oriels and stepped gables and boasts one of Europe’s most beautiful shopping streets, where the shops are open even on Saturday afternoon.

The markets of South Tyrol draw visitors in with their particular charm: the hustle and bustle, the constant coming and going, the many faces, smells and the merry chatter of voices. Here you can really experience South Tyrol in all its many facets: multicultural, traditional and open all at the same time.
